Tonight on The South Bank Show we feature one of the new generation of dedicated young film directors who have changed the face of Hollywood in the past ten years. He made his name with films full of nervous humour and explosive violence like 'Mean Streets', 'Taxi Driver', 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More' and the extravagant musical, 'NEW YORK, NEW YORK'. MELVYN BRAGG talks to MARTIN SCORSESE about these films and about his controversial new feature, 'Raging Bull', which tells the true story of boxer Jake la Motta who was middle-weight champion of the world in 1949. La Motta is played in his prime, and in his gross decline, by ROBERT DE NIRO, the actor who has starred in nearly all of Scorsese's films.
