Viewpoint 87 series 2 episode 5: Thy Kingdom Come
id: ITV-01-1820
format: SD
Thy Kingdom Come explores the powerful Christian right wing movement which has swept America, forging a close alliance with Ronald Reagan's White House and promoting candidates for Federal, State and local office. The Christian Fundamentalists have an unquestioning belief in the literal truth of the Bible, and their leaders claim a following of ninety million Americans - roughly forty per cent of the US population. They vehemently oppose the American school system, women's rights, homosexuality, abortion, social security and liberalism in any form - while advocating the death penalty, nuclear armament and aid to the right wing Contra rebels in Nicaragua. The programme explores the phenomenon of TV evangelism through Jim Bakker who with his wife Tammy ran a daily God-slot show with slick presentation and heavenly choirs. They have also built a $150m fantasy park for Christians, Heritage USA. Church members talk about their beliefs and describe their escape from addiction and personal misery. The film includes interviews with church members Judy Grenier; Rosan Crawford; John and Ginger Drake; Sara Williams and Mike Goodson; Bob Farrar; Preacher Larry Lea; Jim Bakker, TV Evangelist; Neil Eskelin of Heritage USA; Kevin (18 year old disabled boy who features in Bakkers TV appeals); Tim Le Haye of American Coalition for Traditional Values; Morton Blackwell of Leadership Institute (forms links between Fundamentalists and Reagan); Gary Jarmin of Christian Voice and Jeff Burnsed, Pastor of Baptist Church.
