From its release in 1968, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang continues to appeal to every new generation of children, making it one of the most enduring and popular family films of all time. Written by James Bond author Ian Fleming, and produced by Bond supremo Cubby Broccoli, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was a lavish production, taking over a year to make on locations in both England and the South of France. With a score provided by the Oscar-winning song-writing team from Mary Poppins, Richard and Robert Sherman, and with Dick Van Dyke in the lead role as eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, this was the British movie to prove that it was not only Walt Disney who could make the blockbuster family musical. In this hour-long celebratory programme, the cast look back on their days making one of the world's favourite movies. Dick Van Dyke recalls some of his career-best performances in numbers like 'The Old Bamboo', whilst his on-screen children Heather Ripley and Adrian Hall remember how caring and supportive both Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes were throughout the film's long production. Cast members now gone are also remembered, including Australian ballet star Robert Helpmann, who created the memorable, if not downright terrifying, character of the child-catcher. But there were some darker moments. Heather Ripley, playing Jemima, tells how she hated the movie-making experience as filming dragged on and she was kept away from her family back in her native Dundee. She blames the film for her parents' divorce, and turned her back on it for many years of her adult life. Ironically for someone associated with one of the world's most recognisable automobiles, Heather became an anti-road protester, living in protest camps with her two young children. Adrian Hall however loved making the film, and in this programme fulfills a lifetimes ambition when he finally gets to drive the car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang himself. Sad times are forgotten however as Dick, Sally, Heather and Adrian - and of course Chitty herself - are re-united for the first time since the film was made.
