The Wild Pacific Trail is an 8-kilometre coastal trail located in Ucluelet on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It runs along the rocky shoreline of the Pacific Ocean, overlooking Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands. The trail sits on part of the Karmutsen Formation, a sequence of volcanic basalt created during the Triassic period, later shaped by glacial and marine erosion. The coastline features cliffs, coves, and offshore sea stacks typical of Vancouver Island’s exposed western edge. The area lies within the traditional territory of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Ucluelet First Nation), whose presence in the region dates back thousands of years. The modern trail was developed beginning in the late 1990s through local community efforts led by Ucluelet resident “Oyster” Jim Martin, with the goal of providing public access to the natural and historical features of the Pacific Rim coastline. It is now maintained as a public trail and is recognized for its geological, cultural, and environmental significance.
