A significant landslide forced the closure of the road, as the landslide occurred on a section of the road undergoing construction work. The incident took place on the Dharchula-Tawaghat road in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh border district on December 20. The visual shows a massive chunk of the hill breaking away and plunging into the river within seconds, creating a thick cloud of dust. Witnesses, including locals and soldiers, are capturing videos of the event, with many expressing shock and fear at its magnitude. According to reports, District Magistrate Vinod Giri Goswami described it as a major incident but expressed relief that there were no casualties or damage to property. Such occurrences are common in the region due to ongoing construction work, he noted. The landslide left several vehicles stranded on both sides of the road. The local administration has advised residents and travelers to use alternate routes as debris-clearing efforts continue. Teams from the Border Road Organisation (BRO) and the National Highways Authority are working around the clock to restore the road. SDM Manjeet Negi and SP Pithoragarh Rekha Yadav, who confirmed the authenticity of the video, stated that reopening the route might take some time. This incident underscores the challenges of infrastructure development in mountainous areas and highlights the need for stringent safety measures to protect workers and travelers.
