Description

Actor David Oyelowo discusses his film Captive 2015 and his character inspired by the true story of convict Brian Nichols. Oyelowo talks about it being a challenge to play such a violent man, he met up with the author of the book who had written about Nichols to do some research, as he wasn't allowed to visit Nichols in prison due to him still being in solitary confinement. Oyelowo goes on to talk about the quality of a character role rather than the size, although he does keep striving to play the leading man. Oyelowo began his career in the UK in the TV Series Spooks 2003, it was a ground breaking drama that attracted a huge audience and also many industry insiders thanks to its cinematic quality, he left the show because directors who had seen his performance were so keen to work with him. As You Like 2006 a Shakespeare adaptation directed by Kenneth Branagh, Oyelowo admires Branagh and goes on to discuss acting and the journey it has taken him on, the challenges and confidence he has gained from working with some of the great directors and fellow actors in the industry. The Last King Of Scotland 2006 Oyelowo recalls getting to witness at close hand Forest Whitaker become Idi Amin - with Whitaker staying in character for the duration of the shoot, not something that Oyelowo believed at the time was his style, but an experience that would prove hugely inspirational when he landed the role of Martin Lurther King in Selma 2014. Oyelowo had just moved to L.A when he first read the script for Selma, and had a strong, instinctive belief that he was destined to play the role of Dr. King. The project however had hit a wall and gone though several directors, so in order to break the dead lock and get the film made Oyelowo brought in Oprah Winfrey to produce and Ava DuVernay to direct the movie. Oyelowo goes on to discuss the limitations of being a black actor in the UK compared to the industry in America and its greater opportunities.
