Description

British director Joe Wright discusses his film Pan 2015, he found the script very moving honest and beautiful. He quickly signed up to the film and explains the film focuses on Pan looking for his mother, a film about the mother and son relationship which isn't shown very much in cinema. Pride & Prejudice 2005, Wright reflects on how he sees period films as like fairytales, they have a fantasy element. 'It was a blissful shoot, filmed in the English countryside in summertime' with a fantastic cast of Keira Knightly, Rosamund Pike and Donald Sutherland. Charles II 2003 Wright directed this 4 episode TV mini series starring Rufus Sewell, he reflects on it being about sex and policies, a really fantastic script. They didn't have much of a budget for elaborate sets so they had to make do with whatever his loyal designer Sarah Greenwood could find. Atonement 2007 Wright talks about the film being period but with a very modern structure. Wrights talks about the famous one-take Steadicam Dunkirk shot, a very emblematic piece, it took 1000 extras on a beach location who were all given a character backstory, a lot of rehearsing and then they had to patiently wait for the right light to film it. Wright's films were starting to get noticed by Hollywood but explains he has never been particularly interested and prefers British, European and Russian films. The Soloist 2009 shot in Skid-row downtown L.A starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx, about a newspaper journalist discovering a homeless musical genius. Wright went to do some research in downtown L.A and made some connections, he decided to only do the film if he was allowed to employ 500 members of the skid-row homeless community to be extras in the movie, he got the go ahead. Unfortunately despite all his noble efforts the studio didn't back the film, so it ended up a commercial flop. Wright took this personally, it was a difficult situation so he decided in order to move on from the experience he would shoot something bolder and thought Hanna 2011 starring Saoirse Ronan would be the perfect project. The Chemical Brothers did the score adding to the action and adventure about a teenage girl assassin. Anna Karenina 2012 starring Keira Knightly, Wright had the idea of filming the Shepperton Studio movie against a theatre back drop, it became almost like a ballet with words. Wright discusses the Chanel commercials he also shoots with Keira Knightly he admits 'they are a lot a fun shooting in Paris, a real treat! 'He lastly reflects on Pan being a very complicated high energy shoot, he plans to get smaller next time, maybe do a musical, just carry on playing and experiencing joy, beauty and intimacy - as this is the point!'
