Michelle Williams discusses her 2011 film My Week with Marilyn in which she plays the Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe. Williams offers her thoughts about Marilyn and how much she struggled with her fame. Williams likens her to a superhero with special powers for the way she could switch on and off her persona for her fans. It took Williams ten months to prepare for her role as Marilyn and ten months to shoot. Williams goes on to discuss how she became an actress, leaving home at 15 to live in North Carolina where she shot the teen series Dawsons Creek, and then at 18 how she moved to New York where she got into the theatre scene and gradually found her feet. It was appearing in a play called Killer Joe by Tracey Letts that Williams really found her niche. She loves working on Independent films, even though they don't necessarily have widespread appeal, saying that if even just a single person watched and enjoyed one of these films then that would still make her happy. Her two favourite Indie films she appeared in were Wendy & Lucy 2008 and Meeks Cut Off 2011. She trusts her own instinct when it comes to picking future projects and goes with her heart. Blue Valentine 2010 Williams discusses her journey and finding her feet with directors - what is expected of her and what she expects from herself. Brokeback Mountain 2005 was a huge hit but while making the film and even after watching it she had no idea it would be so popular. Williams reflects on why she continues to make films, it's because she enjoys the element of surprise and she likes to surprise herself. Williams then discusses A Week with Marilyn 2011, where she very much enjoyed working with Kenneth Branagh who plays Laurence Olivier in the film. Her director Simon Curtis was very empathetic and supportive of Williams, the role was a very transformative process for her to portray Marilyn Monroe.
