American screenwriter and director Brian Helgeland discusses his film Legend 2015 about infamous London gangsters Ronnie and Reggie, with both parts played by Tom Hardy. He details the research process and talking to old associates and friends of the twins, going around the east-end and getting to the bottom of the mythology thats so alive still in London's history. Helgeland talks of how they shot Hardy playing both characters, he would play Reggie in the morning and Ronnie after lunch. L.A Confidential 1997 he wrote the screenplay and won an Oscar, this was very early on his career. His director Curtis Hanson was previously a screenwriter and made his way to be a director, which is what he wanted to also achieve. He discusses movie dialogue and how he views it, as very poetic and pure. Payback 1999 was the first film he directed starring Mel Gibson who he had met on the film he wrote previously called Conspiracy Theory 1997. A Knights Tale 2001 was a big production, it felt like a old western set with horses and medieval tents, they filmed in Prague. He cast his friend British actor Paul Bettany, which turned out to be his breakout film. The film turned out to be a modest hit, Helgeland discusses directing a few more films back to back and becoming fatigued, so he went back to his 'day job' of writing. Mystic River 2003 directed by 'the solid' Clint Eastwood and Man On Fire 2004 directed by his favourite director Tony Scott. Filmed in Mexico City, he discusses the exhilarated, passionate Scott, working with him was all consuming, he lived for his films. Robin Hood 2010 directed this time by Ridley Scott, Helgeland wanted to 'push the myth of Robin Hood around a bit.' 42 2013 is about the first ever professional black baseball player Jackie Robinson in 1947, he was very cautious to tell his story and with working closely with his widow Mrs Robinson he wanted to serve Jackie and his story well.
