Description

History series charting the events that led to the end of Great Britain's imperial rule. The British invasion of Suez in November 1956 is generally accepted as a turning point for the Empire. This programme tells the story of Britain's gradual eviction from Egypt between 1951 and 1956. For the British Empire, Egypt was the Suez canal, the lifeline of the Empire. In the canal zone Britain maintained the largest overseas military base to deal with any threat to the Empire's trade and stability. In 1936 British control was legalised by a treaty and in October 1951 tore it up. We look at the ramifications.
