The film, based on the novel of Nikos Kazantzakis, is a radical interpretaion of the life of Jesus, portaying him as a tormented figure, trying to come to terms with a supremely difficult destiny. Scorsese discusses the films relation to his own Catholic upbringing, and how the latter has been a constant influence on his work.
