Disappearing World: The Mursi: Nitha
ID: ITV-01-1161
Format: SD
Location: Ethiopia, Africa
Description

Groundbreaking and internationally acclaimed anthropological series featuring intimate portraits of tribal peoples and remote communities across five different continents. This film looks at the beginning of the most significant two days the Mursi people have known in thirty years; the creation of an entire new generation of adults. The ceremony is called the 'Nitha'. At the centre of the ceremony is the elder Garrana. He is the only man who can make the ceremony happen, though he is nearly 80 now, these will be the most important days of his life. Over the years we have seen how the Mursi have fought to preserve their way of life, in the face of drought, hunger and war. In the 1980s we have seen how they have tried to come to terms with their increasing contact with modern Ethiopia. Now we have returned to witness the most crucial event in Mursi life at a moment when their very survival was under threat. The Nitha ceremony, which gives adulthood to an entire generation, is performed by the Mursi of South West Ethiopia amidst fears that this time may be the last. The Disappearing World film crew return to film for one last time.
