Swedish actress Alicia Vikander discusses her film Testament of Youth 2014 in which she plays Vera Britton author of the memoir that the film is based on. Vikander talks about her surprise at landing the role - being a Swedish actress playing this very British historical figure. She wanted to bring a modern edge to the film to reflect the books ‘timeless feel’ along with her co-star Kit Harrington, who she had met on a previous film. Vikander goes on to talk about how she worked on her English language skills to prepare for the role and how since becoming fluent it has opened up many more work opportunities. Following this is Vikander’s breakout film, A Royal Affair 2012, a Danish production shot in the Czech Republic, Vikander notes that her performance won her an Oscar nomination and raised her profile internationally. Anna Karenina 2012 directed by Joe Wright, Vikander relates how Wright ‘bravely’ changed from filming on location in Russia - to shooting in a studio converted into a theatre at the last minute. Vikander then explains that as a trained dancer, she incorporates this skill into her acting, in particular she references her film Ex Machina 2014 in which she plays a robot. She discusses how she wanted to portray the character - aiming to ‘capture something pure’. The next project discussed is The Man From Uncle 2015 directed by Guy Ritchie, Vikander talks about Ritchie’s unique style and the fun, making this action packed 1960’s movie based on the famous TV series. Vikander then discusses filming two movies in Australia and New Zealand, Son of a Gun 2014 with Ewan McGregor and The Light Between the Oceans 2016 with Michael Fassbender. She finishes by saying she is ‘always looking to work with amazing filmmakers’ and is currently preparing to film her new movie The Danish girl in her new hometown of London with Eddie Redmayne.
