Actress Samantha Morton discusses her film Sweet and Lowdown 1999 directed by Woody Allen in which she plays a mute character called Hattie opposite Sean Penn. Morton describes what it was like working with Allen and Penn - and everything that she gained from the experience on and off the set. She reflects on Woody being very kind and generous. Morton received an Oscar nomination for this role. Morton then discusses her Northern, working class roots and coming across prejudice when going up for castings because she was not a middle class. After the Woody Allen film this was no longer a problem. Minority Report 2002 directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise, Morton felt quite intimidated by the enormity of the production and really had to find her feet. She explains her acting style is organic and she likes to rehearse. She had to find the courage to speak up irrespective of the Hollywood blockbuster machine. Control 2007 a biography of Ian Curtis from Joy Division, Morton was keen to work with director Anton Corbijn, the film was an Indie hit. Synecdoche 2008 written and directed by Charlie Kaufman and starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. Morton reflects on her character Hazel who she played from a young girl right through to an elderly lady, having to be at the top of her game with the level of talent in the film - saying it was a masterclass and a weird and wonderful experience. Lost Panthers 2015 a TV series that had been developed over 4 years by Jack Thorne and was eventually directed by Johan Renck. Morton credits this role as her best yet. A very physical part as an ex U.N soldier turned diamond dealer for an insurance company, also starring John Hurt. Morton discusses her artistic influences listing American actresses Gina Rowlands and Barbara Hershey and singers Patti Smith and Stevie Nicks.
