The highly-controversial bull taming sport, Jallikattu was seen taking place in southern India's Andhra Pradesh, despite there being a ban on it. This incident happened in Santhipuram mandal of Chittoor district, on January 28. Visuals showed the sport taking place in the area. A huge crowd had arrived in the area to witness the bull-taming sport take place. The area where the bulls would later go on to run was barricaded and people had thronged on both sides of the boundaries to watch the action. Announcements were made on microphones and later, the action started. Bulls were seen running in the narrow lane at top speed and people chased the bovines in an attempt to tame them. Jallikattu was banned by the Supreme Court earlier as it involves a lot of risk, both to the animal as well as the person. Traditionally, bulls are released from their pens and bull-fighters then try to stop or 'tame' the animal by holding onto their humps for about 15-20 metres. Over the years, several people have been killed in this dangerous sport by the irate bulls with many participants and even spectators being trampled to death as well. Activists have called for this sport, which happens during the Pongal celebrations, to stop while loyalists of the Jallikattu tradition have said that it should continue as it has a lot of historic and cultural value. The Tamil Nadu high court had banned it in 2006 after a young spectator had died in this. Subsequently, the Supreme Court of India had banned it in 2014 on grounds of animal cruelty. Three years later, the Tamil Nadu government lifted the ban following protests made in the state in support of the controversial sport. In this case, the District Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishanth said that the sport is not allowed in the area but despite that, bulls were brought from different states to practice this sport.
