Roth then talks about Made in Britain 1982 directed by Alan Clarke, this was his breakout film, he talks about never wanting to be a stage actor, always wanting to be a screen actor, so he used this film to get ahead in the industry. He discusses his fellow actors that were all emerging together, the likes of Gary Oldman, Phil Daniels and Ray Winstone. Meantime 1984 Clip is shown here. This film was released during a very tough time in British film, during this period of severe unemployment Roth managed to shoot a few films, one being The Hit directed by Stephen Frears. This led to Roth being cast by director Robert Altman in Vincent and Theo 1990, Altman gave him total freedom when it came to the scripts, even asking the actors where they would like the camera, Roth stating 'it had a very punk feel to it’. Reservoir Dogs 1992 directed by Quentin Tarantino follows next. Roth got the part in a very traditional way through his agent, Tarantino had seen him in a previous film and liked what he did. Once on set Roth knew that what they were shooting was something special. At the Cannes Film festival where Reservoir Dogs was screening, Tarantino read a hand written script out to him that was his next project, this was to become Pulp Fiction. Rob Roy 1995 was Roth’s first big studio film, although the director Michael Caton-Jones didn't make it feel like one, Roth was concerned about his exaggerated performance and half expected to be sacked at any moment throughout the shoot. Planet of The Apes 2001 directed by Tim Burton is discussed next with Roth saying how he really got the sense of an epic scale production. Everyone Says I Love You 1996 directed by Woody Allen, Roth says they got on like a house on fire. Roth reflects on sending out letters to a few big movie directors at the beginning of his career, one director was Francis Ford Coppola who not only read the letter but kept it, he brought it along to show Roth when he cast him in Youth Without Youth 2007. Roth went on to film a TV series Lie To Me 2009 -2011, here he discusses not feeling happy at first, as it took him a while to shake off movie acting, and it was hard work. Arbitrage 2012 starring Richard Gere, his first movie back after TV. Roth talks about his future projects and wanting to do more Independent films as well as more TV. He had just shot two projects in France, Modius 2013 and Grace of Monaco 2014. Roth says he is not interested in performing on the stage due to his severe stage fright, but is interested in directing.
